Amazon Asks Employees to be in Office Thrice a Week

Amazon has announced that it will be bringing employees back into the office at least three days per week starting from May 1. This move marks a departure from the company’s previous policy, which allowed teams to decide for themselves whether they would work from home or the office. In an official blog post, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged that some roles would be exceptions to the new policy, such as certain salespeople and customer support staff. Jassy also noted that the return to office work would not be simple and that the company would need to give its teams time to develop a plan for the transition.

The decision to return to the office comes as the world begins to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. The guiding principle in these conversations was to prioritize what would best enable Amazon to make customers’ lives better and easier every day and relentlessly invent to do so.

The CEO went on to highlight the benefits of working from an office, stating that it enables people to collaborate better, learn from each other, and connect better. Teams tend to be better connected to one another when they see each other in person more frequently, according to Jassy. The CEO also said that it is easier to learn, model, practice, and strengthen a company’s culture when employees are in the office together most of the time and surrounded by their colleagues.

Amazon’s decision to bring employees back to the office is not without controversy. The move comes on the heels of the company’s announcement of large-scale layoffs last month, in which around 18,000 roles were cut.
