Milk Thistle: Risks and Side Effects

Milk thistle, also known as Silybum marianum, is a herb that is native to Southern Europe and is widely used for its medicinal benefits. It is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is loaded with antioxidants. Although milk thistle has various health benefits, overindulging in this herb can have several side effects. In this article, we will discuss the negative effects of milk thistles and what research says about them.

Abdominal Problems

Research has shown that milk thistle can cause certain abdominal problems, including diarrhoea, bloating, gas, and an upset stomach. It has also been linked to abdominal fullness, anorexia, and changes in bowel habits.

Allergic Reactions

Milk thistles can cause allergic reactions in people, especially in individuals who are also allergic to ragweed, marigolds, daisies, and chrysanthemums. Some reports have also stated that milk thistle can cause skin rashes and hives.

Estrogen and Drug Interactions

Milk thistle is known to have several estrogen-like properties and may aggravate a few health conditions sensitive to estrogen. It might also decrease hormone levels in the body. Taking it along with estrogen pills might reduce their effectiveness. Milk thistle might interact with certain drugs, such as indinavir, Elavil, Valium, Celebrex, Voltaren, Lescol, Cozaar, Demadex, Coumadin, and Zyflo. Since milk thistle affects how well the liver breaks down these medications, it can affect how well these medications can work.

Interactions During Breastfeeding and Pregnancy

The safety of milk thistle during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well studied. Although it has been historically used to improve the flow of breast milk, it is recommended to stay safe and avoid use.

Interactions with Cholesterol Medication

Milk thistle might interact with statin drugs, which are known to lower cholesterol levels. Some of these drugs may include Mevacor, Lescol, Zocor, Pravachol, and Baycol. Milk thistle interacts with these drugs as both are broken down by the same liver enzymes.

Lower Blood Sugar Way Too Much

Milk thistle contains a chemical called silymarin, which can decrease blood sugar levels. Although there is a lack of direct research, taking milk thistle along with diabetes medication may lower blood sugar levels way too much.

Weakness

Certain individuals might experience weakness with milk thistles. Other related symptoms include a tingling sensation in the muscles and muscle cramps. In one case, milk thistle caused excessive sweating and weakness.

Conclusion:

Milk thistle has several health benefits but must be consumed in moderation. Overindulging in milk thistle can cause several side effects such as abdominal problems, allergic reactions, estrogen and drug interactions, interactions during breastfeeding and pregnancy, interactions with cholesterol medication, lower blood sugar levels too much, and weakness. If you experience any of these side effects, you should stop using milk thistle and consult your doctor.
