Unilever has recently recalled some popular brands of its Dry Shampoo after it was discovered that they were contaminated with benzene which can cause cancer. Some other brands which have been recalled include Suave, Nexxus, Tresemme and Tigi.
This move again raises concern about the harmful effects of aerosols in personal care products.

What is a Dry Shampoo?

Dry Shampoo or Hybrid Shampoo is a Shampoo in powder form which is administered from an aerosol can. It helps in reducing hair greasiness without washing with water. It is also used to style hair or to increase volume. It comes in powder form and is sprayed from an aerosol can. The formula is often based on corn starch or rice starch

How Does Dry Shampoo Work?

It uses starch bases ingredients to soak the oil and sweat from hair follicles. When it is sprayed on the hair it removes oil and dirt from the hair to make it appear cleaner. Some of them also include a fragrance, for a fresh smell after use.

How to Use Dry Shampoo?

They generally come in spray bottles or cans. It can be sprayed directly into the roots. The alcohol or starch soaks up oil and grease, making hair look cleaner. A blow Dryer can also be used along to give extra bounce and volume to the hair.

Dry Shampoo vs. Washing Hair

It can be considered more of a hair freshener than a hair cleaner. It may also leave residue on the scalp which can lead to infection or dandruff.
Whereas washing hair cleans away yeast and bacteria and can also help open pores and wash any styling product left.
Experts recommend that even if you are using it, you should wash your hair with Shampoo and water a few times a week.

Drawbacks

Using Dry Shampoos frequently can lead to preventing natural oil from hydrating hair which can make them brittle. Also, the residue can become a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. Some might also contain carcinogens.
